In the middle of Middelburg's beautiful historic centre, the imposing Lange Jan abbey tower rises proudly above the many monuments.
The Abbey has two churches: the Choir Church and the New Church. In between is actually the third church: the Wandelkerk or Auditorium. The current church buildings originated around the year 1300 and were originally one Abbey church together. The New Church was rebuilt after a fire in 1568. Adjacent to the Nieuwe Kerk and the Koorkerk is the Lange Jan tower. For many, this tower is the symbol of Middelburg.
