I created this work when the Black Lives Matter movement spoke out forcefully against racism after the death of George Floyd. I see this black woman as the bringer of news, of new words, new ways of relating to each other. New rights too. Her garb is reminiscent of waves, like the wave movement of the anti-racism movement.
I didn't have a preconceived plan, I started drawing on my Ipad and then created this image.
I think the warmth of the sun and the cooler blue of her clothing complement each other well. To me, the woman exudes a kind of calmness and strength, something I often notice in black women who speak out against racism.
