The Rijnhaven is a port basin in Rotterdam. The Rijnhaven is one of the oldest ports on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas. The construction lasted from 1887 to 1895. The area is 28 ha.
She was initially dug as mountain haven for Rhine vessels, mainly in the winter when the sea ships had to unload their cargo and the Rhine Ships by freezing the above rivers could not sail up the Rhine. In his report of July 16, 1888 wrote to the Director of Public Works, GJ de Jongh, commented:
"In my report of the 11th of January 1887, I pointed out the necessity which existed then to dig a harbor basin, where the Rhine vessels, mainly in the winter, in could be salvaged. The result of this report dug Rijnhaven has this winter proven excellent services. the Harbour Master would certainly not have been able fleet of Rhine ships to deliver a good berth, so this basin, although even then in onvoltooiden state, this would have been present. in those mentioned above report I said, include the following "Will increase the transit, then, when no space enough to offer more buoys lying in the river, the port by whole or partial deepening be adapted to accommodate the largest ships." According to the report of the Harbour Master this time has now come. "
Rijnhaven eventually became thereby a port for transshipment of bulk cargo "on stream", that is, apart from the quay.
