The fishing town of Peniche, in Centro de Portugal, has a rough edge. The centre is not much special. Just a town with a big fish market and a fishing port where big ships dock and fishermen boat their nets.
But when you walk further west, you soon stumble upon the high cliffs. Some areas of the town are half built on the crumbling cliffs, but in some places the cliffs are nothing more than rocks that the sea smashes against.
Portugal's west coast is one of the most turbulent in Europe. Towering waves, cliffs and rocks. At the same time, it is one of the richest fishing grounds. Portugal is and always has been the land of fishermen.
This is precisely why Peniche is a wonderful example of Portuguese fishing culture. With a rough edge, yes, but that is just a good part of its charm, I think.
A picture that belongs to people who have a heart for the sea.
