Snow-white sand, turquoise-blue sea, reddish-brown granite peaks - and the kangaroo next door. Esperance's Lucky Bay fulfils every Australian cliché. If you want to swim here, you should come in summer: Only then does the Southern Ocean reach pleasant bathing temperatures.
The huge dunes to the east of Esperance are the landmark of the only seaside resort in the Goldfields region. However, because its tides are quite fresh, it has not yet been developed for international tourism and is still in a state of slumber. Here, the south-west of Western Australia is still truly provincial, not yet developed for the rich from Perth. So the locals are delighted that they still have this marvellous piece of earth to themselves. The name of the summer resort means "hope" in German - and refers to the French frigate "L'Espérance", which anchored in the bay in 1792.
