The Chernobyl nuclear disaster is the largest nuclear disaster that has ever occurred. The accident happened on April 26, 1986 near the Ukrainian (then part of the Soviet Union) cities of Chernobyl and Pripyat, near the border with Belarus. Reactor 4 of the nuclear power plant exploded in this accident. It happened in the middle of the night, when most residents of Chernobyl and Pripjat were asleep.
Truus Nijland is a passionate photographer who has a penchant for abandoned buildings such as castles, monasteries, churches and industrial locations.
