Johannes Bosboom discovered the seaside resort of Scheveningen during a holiday in 1873. The rather depressed artist usually painted moody church interiors. That summer he was completely alive, which resulted in this wide panorama, among other things. Bomschuiten, fisherman's wives, churchgoers, donkeys and on the right the summer residence Nieuw-Soetenburgh, demolished in 1853, which Bosboom may have added on the basis of an old image.
