John Ouds Profile picture The Galgewater in Leiden during sunset.
Galgewater
The Galgewater is a small part of the Old Rhine and runs from the Rembrandt-bridge towards the city centre. Also the streets along the water are called Galgewater and Korte Galgewater. At the name Galgewater we immediately think of real gallows. And as it turns out, it really is named after them.

Gallows field
In the past it was very common to exhibit the mortal remains of the executed. In Leiden the gallows were erected along this water. Hence the name Galgewater. There was even a gallows field here. Fun fact: the Morspoort used to be called the Galgpoort. Why? Because through the Morspoort there was a direct route to the gallows field. The Morspoort was even used as a prison.
