Dordrecht van Vroeger Profile picture Here, two polders border each other, namely the Oud-Dubbeldamse polder (also known as the Oudeland van Dubbeldam) and the Noordpolder. Despite the name of the first polder, this piece did not belong to the Dubbeldam craft: it was located north of the Ree, in the seigniory of Merwede. As such, it had been territory of the city of Dordrecht since 1604. The Vissersdijk touched the Ree to the south and merged into the Krommedijk there.

Dordrecht was first mentioned in a text from the twelfth century, when the city was still referred to as Thuredrech, and received city rights in 1220. In the Middle Ages, the city developed into an important trading city and storage place and was one of the six major cities of Holland. Later on, the importance of the city declined, but the inner city still reminds us of this rich past: on the island of Dordrecht lies the city of Dordrecht. The island is surrounded by the following rivers: Lower Merwede, Nieuwe Merwede, Hollands Diep, Dordtsche Kil and Oude Maas. The island is divided in two by the Mistress. Across the island the A16 runs from the Moerdijk Bridge in the south to the Drechttunnel in the north.
