The Arc de Triomphe or the Triumphal Arch is a triumphal arch and one of the most famous buildings in Paris, in the 8th arrondissement. It stands on Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as Place de l'Étoile, one of the busiest squares in Paris, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, where twelve avenues, or avenues, meet.
Construction began in 1806, in honour of Napoleon's victory at Austerlitz. It was not until around 1836, under King Louis Philip, that construction was completed. Under the Arc de Triomphe, after the First World War, the tomb of the unknown soldier who had died in that war was laid out. The Arc de Triomphe has been transformed into a monument in memory of the First World War.
