Fish, lobster, squid, shellfish and crabs in the sea brought together in one painting. Louis Valtat (Dieppe, Normandy, 8 August 1869 - 2 January 1952) was a French painter and graphic artist with ties to the Fauves ("the wild beasts", so called because of their wild use of colour), who first exhibited together in 1905 at the Salon d'Automne. He is known as a key figure in the stylistic transition in painting from Monet to Matisse. At the age of 17, he decided to pursue an artistic career and applied to the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Valtat then studied at the Académie Julian.
