Dürer drew the horse according to his system of ideal proportions which preoccupied him in the years immediately preceding 1505. The influence of antique sculpture is also apparent. The animal is shown in profile against a receding barrel vault permitting accurate measurement and comparison of the parts to the whole. Walking beside the horse is a knight in an elaborate butterfly-winged helmet and winged boots. Some commentators have thought him to represent Perseus or Mercury.
