The rocks are made of limestone and rise from the sea just before the sandy beach of Port Campbell national park. Along the rocks runs the Great Ocean Road over which many tourists travel. Under the influence of the ever pounding waves, a 50-metre-high rock from this row collapsed on 3 July 2005. Since then, eight rock formations remain standing.
The Twelve Apostles are a major tourist attraction. It is possible to take helicopter tours there. They are named after the twelve apostles of Jesus. At first they were called The Apostles, but for marketing reasons this was changed to The Twelve Apostles (although even then there were no 12 rocks).
