Ceiling of the Theatrum Anatomicum in De Waag on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam.
Anatomical theatre
The Theatrum Anatomicum in the Waag was built in 1691 as a space for experimentation, for observations and as a learning environment by the Surgeons' Guild. The driving force behind the anatomical theatre was anatomist, zoologist and botanist Frederik Ruysch, whose coat of arms forms the centrepiece on the ceiling.
