Three Women in a Brothel, Edgar Degas

This unique work is executed in the monotype technique whereby the artist drew with diluted black ink on a copper plate and made a print of it. Immediately after printing, he coloured the image in places with pastel. Degas made a large number of monotypes on the theme of women in a brothel, the 'Scenes de maisons closes'. It is striking that he deliberately chose this somewhat crude technique for these works. Degas kept a large part of this series in his own possession. After his death, the print Three women in a brothel came into the possession of art dealer Maurice Exteens, who lent the work to art dealer Ambroise Vollard for a publication in Le Maison Tellier by Guy de Maupassant with illustrations by engraver Maurice Potin.
