Created especially for the Netherlands by Russian sculptor Leonid Baranov, the sculpture was donated by the Russian Federation to the City of Rotterdam as part of the Tsar Peter the Great year (1996-1997). On 2 October 1997, it was unveiled by the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation H.E. Viktor S. Chernomyrdin. The statue stands on the Veerkade in Rotterdam
