This picture shows the special bee-eater together with the special hoopoe. You can imagine all kinds of things happening between the two birds at that moment.
Bee-eaters live mainly in warm parts of Europe, but successful breeding has also been observed in the Netherlands. Bee-eaters eat insects and are agile flyers. In flight, they catch larger insects. They are mainly found near steep walls of water; rivers, ponds and lakes, where they excavate a nest tunnel in a steep wall.
The hoopoe is a former breeding bird of old, semi-open cultivated landscapes on sandy soils. It nests in cavities of trees, walls, cairns and wooden structures. Hoopoes forage on large insects and their larvae in sparse vegetation with lots of clearings and in lightly fertilised grasslands.
