Built between 1321 and 1382, the Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Originally, the tower was part of the Domkerk, an imposing cathedral that was the spiritual heart of Utrecht in the Middle Ages. In 1674, however, the church was separated from the tower by a devastating storm, which caused the nave to collapse. Since then, the tower has stood as a stand-alone monument symbolising the city's resilience.
The tower has been through a lot over the centuries, from wartime bombings to the heavy load of weather and wind. Recent restoration has not only restored its structural integrity but also restored the finest details of its sculptures and decorations. Today, the Dom Tower is a much-loved landmark and an iconic landmark for both residents and visitors to Utrecht.
