The Volkerak locks are a complex of three commercial shipping locks, four drainage locks and a yacht lock. An extremely important link in the Rotterdam-Antwerp route. The complex was constructed as part of the Delta Works. A secondary dam was constructed to close off the Oosterschelde and the Haringvliet. The traffic junction here is called Hellegat for a reason. Strong treacherous currents controlled the area. The closure of the Volkerak, in 1969, would also block the only shipping route between Rotterdam and Germany and Antwerp and France. The lock was essential. The Volkerak locks are among the larger/busier locks in Europe.
