VW Volkswagen Beetle 60s and 70s classic car in red bordeaux. The Beetle – officially the Volkswagen Type 1, also known as the Bug – is a two-door, four-passenger, rear-engine economy car that was manufactured from 1938 until 2003. Although designed in the 1930s, the Beetle was only produced in significant numbers from 1945 onward. By 2002, over 21 million Type 1s had been produced. During the summer of love in the late 1960s it was also a symbol of hippie culture.
