In the middle of Rome lies the world's smallest independent state, Vatican City.
Vatican City, or Stato della Citta del Vaticano as the Italians call it, is no more than 44 hectares and is completely surrounded by Rome. This makes Vatican City officially an enclave, or a country completely surrounded by another country. You can see St Peter's Square in the centre here. The photo was taken from St Peter's Basilica.
