Fort Castillo stands on a hill at the mouth of Santiago Bay. A true defensive work to keep out anyone other than Spain from the bay, Santiago and from there all of Cuba, the fort is officially called Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca and is also called Castille del Morro. It is not big. It is well located, though. And with its sturdy drawbridges and moat, it used to have to be almost impregnable. Standing on the upper edge of the fort you can see over the battlements a large blue expanse, the Caribbean Sea. Turn west and you see the coast of Cuba. A long undulating coast with hills and natural beaches. And further north you see the bay below. You feel the power of the place. Of the fort. And of the bay, the coast and the sea. A cool, wide place. Which, through its colours and nature, looks warm and invites you to dream.
