Karen Nijst Profile picture I love Vlisco fabrics and have used several patterns for inspiration for my work on many occasions. Although there is no direct association, Vlisco fabrics often remind me of the work of Gustav Klimt, whom I greatly admire. The designs are rich and expressive thanks to the beautifully detailed patterns, the symbolism used and the intense colours.

If Vlisco fabrics were paintings ...
Then you could say they are inspired by expressionism, which focuses on expressing emotions, feelings and inner experiences. It is often colourful, expressive and full of energy, just like the striking designs and vibrant colours of Vlisco fabrics.

Like expressionism, which seeks to express the inner world of the artist in a subjective and emotional way, Vlisco fabrics focus on expressing the rich culture, history and emotions of the people who wear them. They reflect the stories and traditions of African communities in a vibrant and intense way.

Africans are addicted to Vlisco's cheerful European fabrics. They are used for festive occasions, important ceremonies and for outfits in which people want to shine like a star in the sky.

In my creation, I introduce you to a beautifully dressed African woman, who enters with graceful strides into a floral hedge of honour, ready to shine at the ball.
The patterns on her dress and in the background are fantasy and, to my knowledge, never used on Vlisco fabrics.

This artwork is offered by Karen Nijst

Karen Nijst has lived in and near her beloved hometown of Maastricht for many years. She currently works as a web developer (Kahlo Websites in Hapert, Brabant) and is responsible for both programming and graphic design . The latter has undoubtedly influenced some of the drawings you can see here.
Karen likes to draw and write as often as possible and sees herself primarily as an illustrator. She can also become fascinated by a photograph. Like the drawing of the market in Maastricht. What are those people thinking? Where are they going? What would their lives be like? Something like that remains fascinating while drawing each little figure -no matter how small- .
Carnival
Of course also the vastelaovend in Mestreech is subject of many a drawing. A grateful subject even, because only in Maastricht you can find the shoenste scenes. Beautifully dressed up people, wonderful colors ... imaginative and above all: 'chic'.
Technique
In recent years, Karen has enjoyed working on paper and, increasingly, on her IPAD Pro.
Karen: "I enjoy the challenge of looking for the best color palette, the right composition and cut-outs. I also often combine different scenes. In addition, it is not my primary goal to portray people in a recognizable manner, unless of course it is a portrait. I just want to capture a certain atmosphere as well as possible!"
