I photographed this beetle in a garage of a house that had been empty for a long time and had already fallen into disrepair.
The Volkswagen Beetle, is the best known Volkswagen, the best known German car and in general one of the best known cars ever.
The Beetle was a combination of ideas that were put together by Ferdinand Porsche, who was commissioned by Adolf Hitler to make a car for the people. However, large parts of the car were not designed by Porsche, but by Béla Barényi and/or Erwin Komenda. Both claim to be the original creator of the concept. For the time being, it remains unclear who the real inventor of the "Beetle" concept was.
The Beetle's distinctive four-cylinder boxer engine, placed in the back of the car, was designed by Franz Reimspiess. Hitler made it possible to switch to production, but because of the war industry there was little possibility to introduce the Beetle as a popular car. The concept was used more as a propaganda tool. It was not until after the war that production really got off the ground.
