About "Volvo P1800 Coupe From 1961"

About the artwork

The Volvo P1800 Coupe was first presented to the public at the 1960-Brussels Motor Show. The company then turned to Jensen Motors to build the new car as it had underutilized production lines. They contracted Pressed Steel in Linwood, Scotland to build the unibody shells and then transported them to Jensen in West Bromwich, England. The first production P1800 rolled off the line in September of 1961.

The production of the new car was initially delayed until the old plant in Lundby, Sweden was ready. This caused some problems as assembly and lacquer work was not up to scratch. However, the new car plant was completed in 1963 and production moved to Gothenburg. The cars gained the suffix "S" for "made in Sweden" and were sold in the US, where they were manufactured. By the end of the decade, the company had built around 6000 cars and began marketing them directly to the public.

After the initial launch, the Volvo P1800 grew in popularity due to its appearance in the television series. The first production generation was built by Jensen Motors in England. It had an overhead-valve four-cylinder engine with 100 horsepower. The car had a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive and front disc brakes. It's not known how many were sold, but production did end in the early 1970s.
