Rob van der Teen Profile picture In World War II, the men of the 101st Airborne Division were deployed during D-Day, where they were used primarily to relieve the amphibious landings at Utah Beach. The objective was to destroy as many German coastal defenses as possible. However, this goal was met with difficulty, as the paratroopers were dropped in a scattered and disorganized manner. Later the paratroopers were also involved in Operation Market Garden and liberation of Eindhoven, Son, Lieshout and Veghel. During the Battle of the Bulge and particularly during the siege of Bastogne, the division became famous with the "NUTS" incident. The Americans were surrounded and the Germans gave them an ultimatum to surrender. American Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe's response to this ultimatum was short but sweet: "NUTS". As a result, the Germans took heavy fire on the troops in Bastogne, but the division held on until they were relieved by the U.S. 3rd Army led by General George Patton.
