Werkendam is a village and the most important place in the municipality of Werkendam in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. It lies to the south of where the Upper Merwede splits into the Nieuwe Merwede and Beneden Merwede. The Werkendam core had 11,426 inhabitants in 2008.
Werkendam was an independent municipality until 1950. Werkendam was then merged with the municipality of De Werken and Sleeuwijk, which also included the village of Kille. In 1973 the village of Nieuwendijk was added to Werkendam, and in 1997 the municipality of Werkendam merged with the municipality of Dussen to form the current municipality of Werkendam.
