Wernigerode town hall on the south side of the market square. The central half-timbered building was built in the 15th century. The striking half-timbered façade of the town hall was executed in the Lower Saxon style with Franconian-Hessian features. The two slender oriels flanking the entrance rest on free-standing uprights and taper off into slender pointed roofs like towers. The half-timbering and the eaves are additionally surmounted by a slated storey. On the right side of the market is the half-timbered house "Gothisches Haus". It dates from 1494/1498 and served as a refuge for Melanchthon in the 16th century. The term gothic does not refer to the style of the building but to the colloquial word which stood for medieval/old German. Since the middle of the 19th century it has served as an inn.
