Digital composition / Hypercollage photography.
Complete artwork measures 100 cm × 100 cm - 2024
A carefully composed digital collage composed of hundreds of photographed butterfly wings. The work exudes a symphony of colour and symmetry, in which deep shades of orange, turquoise and blue dance in harmony with muted shades of black and grey. This composition balances chaos and order, inviting the viewer to explore the detail and vibrancy in every corner of the composition.
The repetition of patterns suggests an organic, almost kaleidoscopic view of the fragility of life, captured in a moment of frozen motion. The butterflies symbolise transformation and impermanence, while their arrangement evokes a sense of endlessness. This artwork celebrates the dynamism of nature and highlights how even the smallest elements can contribute to an overwhelming whole.
All the elements in the work were photographed by the artist himself and digitally combined to create a seamless visual experience.
"I consider the creativity in the evolution of flora and fauna as something almost magical. The ingenuity of many life forms is something that is often overlooked by many. This sense of wonder is what I want to show in my work and celebrate nature's diversity by enhancing its mystical qualities."
Jesper Krijgsman's supernatural landscapes are places where biology and dreams merge. His work represents both daydreams of the artist and the intelligence and magic that nature possesses. He hopes his vision contributes to the realization that the natural world is full of wonders and we should treat it with more love.
His process involves photography and image editing. He photographs each flower or plants individually and while editing it, he often discovers new details in shapes, colors, and textures. These photographed natural elements are then digitally assembled to create detailed worlds that depict scenes in which the mystical qualities of the natural world are magnified. Photographing, editing, and, above all, learning everything himself about the subjects he photographs has strengthened his connection with the natural world.
Jesper Krijgsman was born in Amsterdam in 1992 and lived in Switzerland for 12 years, where he worked as a graphic designer and artist. He was named a Top Talent by Adobe in 2019 and his work hangs in multiple galleries around the world.
