Winter in the Overasseltse and Hatertse Vennen. A solitary tree stands on the edge of a snow-covered ice plain. The sky is threatening and there seems to be more snow. The Overasseltse and Hatertse Vennen are just south-east of Nijmegen. The area is known as a recreation area for the residents of Nijmegen and there is a lot of walking in all seasons. The area consists of fens and river dunes and is geologically very young (110,000 to 10,000 years ago). The high dry drift sand ridges were extremely suitable for habitation. There are many finds here from different periods of around 8000 BC. until 1500 AD.
