Wood Chapel by Gijs Frieling, Máximapark, Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht. The discovery of remains of primeval forests in the vicinity of Utrecht inspired William Speakman to design his artwork for the Máximapark. In addition, Wood Chapel can also be seen as a reference to the new forest that will arise in the park - as a result, Máxima Park will only really be completed after several decades. The artwork is based on the principle of a wood depot, a place where wood is dried for later processing. The open wooden structure is reminiscent of an American barn, but also of an Oriental chapel or pagoda. Thanks to the various openwork walls, the room has a special incidence of light, giving the interior painted with folkloric motifs by Gijs Frieling an elevated atmosphere.
