The Wormer and Jisperveld, the largest continuous peat meadow area in Western Europe.
In the early Middle Ages, farmers mined the peat bog for agriculture. They dug thousands of ditches to keep their fields dry. From the sky that pattern is still very beautiful to see. In the course of time the peat continued to resonate. The area is now one to two meters below sea level. Countless mills are needed to pump the water away.
