A brown coal mine is an open-cast mine in which brown coal is extracted. Lignite mines are mainly known from Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. Lignite in Europe is mainly extracted from the Ville Formation in the Miocene (Tertiary) and is 10 to 20 million years old. Lignite is an intermediate phase between peat and coal.he extraction of lignite in modern lignite mines goes with machines that are the largest moving vehicles in the world. During exploitation, the groundwater is drained to a much lower level. A few years ago, the province of Limburg complained to the German North Rhine-Westphalian government about the lowered groundwater level on the Dutch side of the border.
