The extraction of lignite in modern lignite mines is carried out by machines that are the largest moving vehicles in the world. During exploitation, the groundwater is drained to a much lower level. A few years ago, the province of Limburg complained to the German North Rhine-Westphalian government about the lowered groundwater level on the Dutch side of the border.
