Beautiful Birds of the World - Bluethroat bird

The bluethroat, a small songbird about the size of a robin, bursts with unexpected color. Males sport a vibrant electric blue throat patch, bordered by black, white, and chestnut, like a miniature stained-glass window. Females are more subdued, but still wear a patterned blue band across their throat.

These birds favor brushy habitats, flitting and hiding amongst shrubs. But watch closely, for singing males might surprise you by perching conspicuously atop a bush, flashing their orange-red upper tail feathers in flight.

Though found across Europe, Asia, and even parts of Alaska, the bluethroat remains somewhat of a mystery.
