Whimsical trees among rapeseed with threatening cloud cover above.
An enchanting landscape where history meets nature.
Along the Lek river near Schalkwijk, an important part of the New Dutch Waterline lies at the bottom of the dike. Fort Werk aan de Groeneweg consists of a system of trenches with earthen walls, bunkers and a moat. Most bunkers are hidden in the earthen ramparts. Today, walkers can wander quietly through the trenches and even enter some of the bunkers.
On the earthen ramparts are old majestic standard fruit trees that had stood the test of time. In spring, these trees are in bloom and surrounded by a sea of yellow flowering rapeseed, creating an unforgettable and breathtaking sight.
The combination of natural splendour and historical significance made this place a true treasure in the heart of the Netherlands.
