The Georgius church is on the edge of the village Stitswerd. The rectified hall church dates back to the 13th century and was heavily rebuilt in the 15th and 19th centuries. At this last renovation, the church probably also received its cream-colored blocking on the outside. By the church, a free-standing tower, dating back to the 17th century, was replaced by a rooftop rocker in which a 1439 bell hangs. The rooftop is crowned by a lantern in the form of a lion, which refers to the noble family of Life of the Klinkenborg, which had a long time collective law in the church. Since 1973, the church has been owned by the Oude Groninger Church Foundation, which restored the church in two centuries. The church is sometimes used by the Protestant municipality of Kantens-Stitswerd-Rottum, especially for special services. The building also has a social function. The church was painted by, among others, team painter Jacob Gerard Hansen.
