The idea of the hookah pipe is said to originate in India and tobacco is traditionally smoked in this way in many villages in South Asia. It used to be a sign of prestige as only the rich could afford to smoke them.
Smoking these 'waterpipes' or 'shisha' has long been a tradition in the Arab world and in the Middle East. Did you know that they are known as the 'okka' or 'hubbly bubbly' in South Africa?
I have seen these many times in my travels around the world, particularly in places such as Turkey and Jordan. However, the last time I saw one actually being used was outside a Turkish restaurant in Brighton, England.
This popular image is one of a small series of exotic oriental hookah pipes, this is a very ornate silver and blue hookah pipe, sitting on a silver platter in front of a pink and gold backdrop.
Born in the South of England I now live half way up a mountain in Umbria, Italy. I work from my art studio looking out over fabulous views of the Italian countryside. I am so happy to share my artwork with you.
An artist and blogger, I specialize in photo art and acrylic painting. For my photo art, I start with my own photographs and work on them digitally to capture the feeling I want to convey with the final image. For my abstract work, I literally 'go with the flow' and follow where my heart wants to take me as I work.
I create art to make your heart smile, capturing the spirit of place in towns and villages, or creating art to enhance the energy of your home or workplace. Take your time to look through my portfolio, I hope you enjoy it.
