About ‘Farewell Driveway - Suburbia 1976’ by Arjen Roos

An ochre-yellow station wagon stands tightly in profile at the curb. Moving boxes and a rolled-up carpet roll balance on the roof rack; the family is ready to drive off. Behind the side window sits a 12-year-old boy, head against the glass, his gaze fixed on the intersection where his past ends. Twelve metres away on the footpath stands a thirteen-year-old girl in bright red short shorts and red and white striped T-shirt. Her long blonde hair dances in the warm spring breeze as she waves one more time. Between them is a narrow strip of asphalt, but emotionally there is an ocean of unspoken childhood love.

The image exudes the muted Kodachrome colours of the 1970s: mustard, avocado and one telling red accent. Fine film grain gives the whole thing that palpable nostalgia in which sadness and sweetness blend imperceptibly.
