This is a traditional view in the charming Tuscan town of Cortona in Italy, with a picturesque alleyway leading to a floral courtyard.
We look down a charming flagstone alley past the display of petunias and the little cart covered with flower pots towards a half open old wooden door with a table and chairs with tablecloth. The sign in the corner tells us there is a restaurant, and very inviting it looks.
Cortona in Tuscany is firmly on the tourist trade and this alleyway leads off from the main street that runs through the town. At the height of the season the main street is teeming with visitors so this little alleyway provides a few moments of quiet respite, an invitation to get out of the baking sun and enjoy the shade. There is one other thing that catches your eye on a hot day, of course, and that is a chance to freshen up and quench your thirst. So the traditional water fountain that stands in front of the table and chairs is welcome.
For me, this image speaks of the essence of Tuscany, the warm colors, the interplay of light and shade and the culture.
