These Great Egrets (Ardea alba) flew nicely in succession during a cold February month in 2021. They were on their way to a place with more food. When there is snow on the meadows, it is difficult for the herons to find a tasty morsel of food. It mainly looks for fish, but also for frogs, mice, small birds and moles. Try finding those when it is -10 degrees Celsius and the ditches are frozen. During extreme cold in winter, many Great Egrets fly to the warmer south. You can then see them flying over in large groups. The white of these Egrets combines beautifully with the clear blue sky above. It's a pretty peaceful and calm image. One idea is to have these birds flying from north to south on the wall in your home as well. I was here in the polder of Gouderak. That is right next to Gouda. I was taking a walk back and forth about 40 kilometres. That was quite a long walk, but beautiful in the winter landscape.
