The Amstel River with the Dirk van Nimwegen Bridge on the left. It is a fixed bridge in Amsterdam city center.
It is located in the eastern quay of the Amstel River and crosses the Nieuwe Keizersgracht. The bridge is surrounded by national monuments on both the Amstel and the Nieuwe Keizersgracht. The most famous of these is the building of museum Hermitage Amsterdam. On the other side of the Amstel, too, almost the entire facade consists of monuments. Among all these national monuments, around the southern corner between the two waterways is a municipal monument Amstel 53/Nieuwe Keizersgracht 2. However, the bridge itself is not a monument; it is too young for that. This is a vaulted bridge.
Dirk van Nimwegen (1904 - 1969) was an Amsterdam communist, resistance fighter and one of the initiators of the February Strike in 1941. He was employed by the City Cleaners.
