About ‘I sink and rise’ by Sander Poppe

This photo was taken one evening on the coast of Walcheren, near Westkapelle. It was the first day of the May bank holiday, a time when everything is still open and the days are slowly settling into their own rhythm. The sky kept changing and delivered exactly what you hope for at sunset by the sea.

As evening fell and the first colours became visible, I was unexpectedly struck by a hypoglycaemic episode. Type 1 diabetes rarely chooses a convenient moment. Yet my gaze remained fixed on the horizon. The sky continued to change colour, the sea kept moving, and almost automatically, I started taking photos.

For me, this image is more than just a landscape. It also says something about the constant search for balance. Luctor et emergo — I struggle and emerge. Sometimes you feel that struggle more clearly than at other times.

At the same time, there is always something about this coast that offers space. The wind, the sound of the waves and the open horizon help you to pause for a moment. This photo is a reminder of that moment: between stillness and movement, between holding on and letting go.
