The Jordaan was a typical working-class neighbourhood, where many craftsmen and small businesses were based. The district came to lie within the fortress of Amsterdam during the Third Extension in the first half of the 17th century. The urban structure of the district follows more or less the pattern of the polder landscape that was created around 1100. Before the construction of the Prinsengracht, the Keizersgracht and the Herengracht, this polder landscape was completely rearranged according to a pattern that curved in a half circle around the old city centre. As a result, the streets and canals of the working-class neighbourhood of the Jordaan are often angled towards the Prinsengracht and do not directly connect to the adjacent streets and bridges of the prosperous ring of canals.
