About ‘Lost at Dawn – A Cinematic Story in Scheveningen Harbour’ by Arjen Roos

In *Lost at Dawn – Cinematic Story in Scheveningen Harbour*, atmosphere, imagination and suggestion come together in a single image. The work forms part of my *Olafique* collection, a series of narrative artworks in which I invite the viewer to interpret what they see for themselves.

A woman walks barefoot along a quay in Scheveningen Harbour. The first light of day reflects off the wet pavement, whilst a mysterious figure looms in the background. The viewer is given no further information. What happened before, what is about to happen, or what the relationship between the two people is, remains deliberately open.

It is precisely this scope for interpretation that forms the core of this work. Whereas some images tell a story, here I try to suggest a story. Anyone looking at the image can discover their own meaning and devise their own narrative. The maritime setting, the soft morning colours and the cinematic composition create an atmosphere that feels both familiar and enigmatic. The open fishing boat, the harbour and the first light of day do not merely serve as a backdrop, but actively contribute to the sense of anticipation inherent in the image. For this work, I combined photography, digital image editing and modern AI techniques into a new composition in which atmosphere takes precedence over explanation. The result is a work of art that continually invites the viewer to look, interpret and rediscover.
