A night view of the "Plaza Mayor" (main square) in the Spanish capital Madrid. Planning for the square began around 1580, when Felipe II commissioned architect Juan de Herrera (known for "El Escorial") to tear down the old buildings and rebuild the square in a rectangular shape. In 1590 the main building of the square was completed, but it was not finished until 1619.
