Hendrik-Jan Kornelis Profile picture Reinforced concrete is a combination of concrete and reinforcing steel. Reinforcement consists of steel rods that absorb tensile forces, while the concrete absorbs compressive forces. In this way crack formation is avoided or strongly limited. A material that consists of two different materials and thus obtains new properties is also called a composite.
