A guard rail or crash barrier is a barrier placed alongside roads to prevent vehicles from leaving the road in a lateral direction, overturning or crossing the central reservation. This minimises injury to occupants and damage to the vehicle.
Guide rails are common on motorways. Guide rails are also installed to guide traffic on secondary roads and in car parks, to protect buildings, fences, poles, machines, scaffolding and to prevent collision damage to buildings. They also prevent falls when there are differences in height.
