A fascinating interplay of nature and technology on this concrete quay wall in Rotterdam. The changing water levels create a horizontal stratification, with the most striking layer being the green strip of algae. But other factors such as lichens, chalk and dirt also contribute. The horizontal indentation and the round tube form a nice contrast to the capriciousness of the natural patterns.
