Ancient medieval architecture is a subject that greatly fascinates me 'as a painter and photographer'.
This handmade watercolour painting shows my interest in this subject and focuses on the urban decay of Venice.
The painting shows old elements and rusty objects with colour contrasts consisting of earthy and green tones of rust and moss.
The visible erosion such as the crumbling plaster, bricks, rusty iron of the ornate bars and the bright ultramarine water gives the painting a typical Venetian atmosphere and look....
Venice is a very old medieval city. Many buildings and foundations are slowly rotting and sinking to the bottom of the Adriatic Sea. And so did this large green door I sailed past on a gondola ride in one of Venice's many canals.
The original image is one I photographed from a gondola.
Shooting from a low perspective gave this old green gate a very powerful and grand appearance.
The old architecture, decay, colour contrasts and beautiful details of the woodwork and iron bars at the window really appealed to me to repaint the photo image into a watercolour painting in my studio.
The original painting is painted at a size of 220x300mm on a 300gsm watercolour paper with a soft fibre texture.
WatercolorWall is a studio where hand-painted watercolors are made. The person behind the studio is Ricardo Bouman, a graphic designer, photographer and painter with a passion for (far) travel and discovering (mountain) landscapes, cities and architecture.
Ricardo has been painting with watercolors for over 25 years and translates his own travel experiences into paintings. His webshop offers various subjects such as: Illustrative realism, Line drawings, Impressionism, Line & Wash and Modern Abstract painting.
Ricardo is a traditional illustrator and painter. He therefore does not use 'Ai' (artificial intelligence). All his works are handmade and created from his own (travel) experiences, ideas and expertise in the field of painting. His subjects often have a connection with nature, an emotion or a (city) location that he has visited himself.
His motto is: 'To be able to create atmosphere, you must first have tasted it'
Ricardo does everything in a traditional way. From stretching the watercolor paper, sketching and drawing the composition and subject, to painting with watercolors and inks.
All paintings are photographed in high resolution and available in this webshop as wall decoration on various materials and sizes.
